work log
18 July
Today I started working on 2D work. I collected a few leaflets, receipts etc. prior to the 18th along the journey. Sitting at the table I had no idea what to do. It always takes a lot of time to get used to a different place of work when it comes to 2D work. As I did not know what I wanted and and was able to do I was basically experimenting and not producing anything concrete. .
19 July
Today I continued to work on the picture I started on the 18th and also produced three more drawings/pictures using tapes, marker pen, pencil. I am not satisfied but I have a clearer idea of what I am doing: process-based drawings that depict the immediate environment mixed with my existing interests in structure and change.

22 July
Arrived at a cruising spot between Bordeaux and the coast where we stopped for the night. I could not resist to start a drawing of building and a car park where the cruisers parked their cars. As I am still not feeling ready for drawings I gave up after about 20 minutes. Besides this, I am a bit vexed as I have forgotten a few sheets of paper at La Maison du comedien in Alloue. I wanted to use those sheets for a few drawings.

On the way to the coast we stopped at a lovely spot with a small lake, beautiful trees and soft soil. As we decided to stay here I got my art material out of my storage and made three collage-drawings. I believe that a strong, I mean a line that is full of self-esteem and security, is important for my kind of drawings. I usually do not use a rubber and do not correct any mistakes. However, as the entire work is process-based I am now correcting mistakes with masking tapes without hiding any errors.

25 July
Today we worked at a spot between the coast and a little town called Damazin where we worked on a pair of large picnic tables. I produced one drawing-collage of one of our stoves on the table. The collage has the characteristics of a patchwork piece. I am still quite unsure of what I am doing or want to do. I am trying to keep the work minimal and structured.

Today we set up studio at Saint Sylvester sur Lot. I produced two pictures.

27 July
Today I attempted to create picture number 11 on a camp site. Not very stealth at all but it feels good to be here surrounded by normal people, a mix of people. Not very inspiring though. Today I constructed the picture from the surface, i.e. I made the surface first and then started to draw and paint. I see more and more a relationship with Chiara's work in terms of composition. My work is constructed like a journey, bit by bit on top and next to each other, a process.

28 July
Today I attempted to produce another picture. The work is becoming more and more cohesive and subtle. I am not sure if today's work is finished or not.

31 July
Today I have completed two pictures. I am trying to create a balance between rough and smooth/subtle. No striking images, keeping it sort of neutral. The work looks a bit like Russian constructivism. I am not sure how much the journey and the circumstances drive me into this direction. There is surely some influence from Chiara in terms of colours and picture construction and maybe even from Phil Illingworth, a very fine artist, who we are visiting at the moment. His work is very different from mine. Whereas mine is messy, his work is 'clean' and perfect in every way. The two pictures I have done since we are here have become a lot more clean. The change in my work can also be attributed to the circumstances: confined space that needs to be kept clean and tidy. We clear up after every work session and transform the van back into a mobile home. Who knows...

01 August
It is clear to me that the change in space and circumstances has had a major impact on my practice. Since working in the van my work has changed dramatically. Not having the usual space available I find myself in the back of a van working on one side. After each session we transform the space back from a studio into a home. This action forces me to be tidier, more organized and maybe a bit more minimal. How much more my practice will change is very interesting to me. I might even make this 'phenomenon one of my projects during this journey.'
03 August
In the last two days I made three drawings/collages. Picture number 15 is in fact picture number 12 to which I have added material. Up to picture 16 I started the picture from a central piece of paper onto which I did an initial drawing or stuck another piece of paper, cardboard or masking tape. Picture 17 is quite different as I started not on a specific piece of paper working from the surface, i.e. building the surface simultaneously. It is rather like an installation than a collage or drawing.

2 November
Back in Italy on the 12th of October after we came back from Switzerland I attempted to continue my drawing-collages with a bit of a disappointing results although I can see a clear development of the work. I am not sure if I like the development or not.

Since we have arrived in Castellammare del Golfo I made a few more collages that are quite different from the ones I made inside the van. They are a lot more tidier and minimal.
