Studio
The studio is the second function of the Red Van. It is a mobile studio which the artists use to create new work on their journey across Europe.
There is very little, if any, common ground between their working practices, however, during this trip they will be subject to similar restrictions of scale and intend to collect and share the same source materials and media. They may be coming at it from different directions and arriving at different outcomes, but this will also be part of the journey.
Find out more about the artists' projects on their individual pages.

Jay Rechsteiner
"I am interested in developing work that explores the peripheral experience of travelling , i.e. work that does not concern itself with depth and the profound understanding of specific themes or the world in general but rather with superficial encounters and quick hellos, simply drifting by. The idea is related to the nature of the residency as we are travelling across Europe in a big red van. There is no exact outline of my work before the point of departure as I find it crucial to respond to new circumstances in order to develop one's practice and evolve as an artist. "I am interested in how my existing work develops within new outlines or confines - those imposed by the journey, by the van and by my new identity as a mother. Strict principles of space, scale, time and priority will all begin to establish a kind of dogma, to which I will have to adapt and from which I will have to create. Logistics include the space available in the van, the scale and variety of media/materials I am able to transport and collect, and the time I have available to me (when not driving, nursing or fending for ourselves). I have not made much work since giving birth to Delphine, so I am not sure how my altered identity will inform the content of my work, which until now has been closely concerned with social and cultural constructions of beauty and value, and the homogenisation of female beauty. I am now inevitably finding myself more interested in wider notions of the sacred feminine and the myth of the goddess." Media: collage, paint, drawing Project page by Chiara Williams: CLICK HERE |
In residence
The Red Van had a week-long residency (29 July - 6 August) at ID Projects, St Angel, Haute Correze, courtesy artists Phil Ilingworth and Natalie Dowse. We were delighted to be the very first ID Projects residency - hopefully the first of many! At the end of the week we held a trial exhibition - see our Stealth Gallery page for more info.
